WHO: More than a million corona deaths in the Europe region | Free press

The World Health Organization makes a sad point: since the start of the pandemic, more than a million deaths have been caused by corona infection in the region of Europe.

Copenhagen (dpa) – According to the WHO regional office, Europe has passed a sad point: More than a million deaths related to corona infections have now been recorded in the countries of the WHO European region.

There are currently 1.6 million new infections every week, as WHO regional director Hans Kluge said during his regular online press conference, which he held this time during his visit to Athens. “That’s 9,500 per hour, 160 people per minute.”

The situation in the European region is still dire, Kluge said. Only among the oldest in society is the incidence likely to decline thanks to advances in vaccinations. There are early signs that the transmission of the coronavirus is slowing in several countries in the region. However, these characters are not synonymous with slow transfer speeds.

WHO Europe, based in Copenhagen, has a total of more than 50 countries in the European region, including the European Union and Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. In the European Economic Area (EEA) – which includes both the EU and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein – the EU health authority ECDC has registered nearly 630,000 corona-related deaths to date.
