Von der Leyen: Biontech delivers 10 million doses earlier | Free press

Good news from Brussels: manufacturer Biontech / Pfizer significantly increases its promised delivery volume to the EU for the second quarter. In any case, this could provide more freedom of movement from April onwards.

Brussels (dpa) – The European Union may receive an additional 10 million doses of corona vaccine from the manufacturer Biontech / Pfizer in the second quarter.

This means that a total of 200 million vaccine doses for the 27 EU countries can be expected from this manufacturer for the period from April to June, EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen said in Brussels on Tuesday.

“I know how important the second quarter is for Member States’ vaccination strategies,” said von der Leyen. “These 10 million proposed doses will bring the total number of Biontech / Pfizer doses to more than 200 million. That is good news. It leaves room for Member States to fill possible gaps in supplies. “

Austria and other EU states had complained that the corona vaccines that are now actually available are not distributed by population, but unevenly among the EU states. According to the European Commission, this is because not all EU countries bought all the vaccines that were offered to them last year. For example, those who rely primarily on Astrazeneca are now particularly affected by the British-Swedish manufacturer’s delivery problems. The additional 10 million doses of Biontech / Pfizer could help defuse the conflict.

The European Commission had signed two contracts with Biontech / Pfizer: one for up to 300 million doses last year; and more than 200 million cans with an option for an additional 100 million earlier this year. This option to 100 million should now be taken, the European Commission said. The company has agreed to expand it to 10 million cans that would otherwise not have been available until the third or fourth quarter.

EU states must now agree that the option is being taken. They must also agree on the distribution of the additional amount.
