US Federal Executes Women First in 67 Years | Free press

In the United States, a woman was executed at the federal level for the first time in 67 years. Shortly before the replacement, the Trump administration has 52-year-old Lisa Montgomery killed by lethal injection.

Washington (AP) – Shortly before his replacement, the administration of President-elect Donald Trump executed a woman convicted of murder.

Lisa Montgomery, 52, died Wednesday night by lethal injection in Terre Haute, Indiana, prison, the “New York Times” and other media reported, citing the appropriate authority. This is the first execution of a woman convicted under federal law since 1953. Hours earlier, the Supreme Court paved the way for the execution with two decisions.

Montgomery was found guilty of murder and kidnapping in 2007 after she killed a pregnant woman and cut the baby from her stomach. She was later sentenced to death for the act, which had caused disgust and horror outside the United States.

In 2004, Montgomery met Bobbie Jo Stinnett, then 23, on the Internet. She visited her victim at home in Skidmore, Missouri, on the pretext that she wanted to buy a dog from her. Stinnett was strangled and found with his stomach cut open. After a search across the US, police found the culprit days later in neighboring Kansas. The child had her with him. She told friends and acquaintances that it was her own daughter. The girl survived the crime and grew up with her father.

President Donald Trump’s US administration had resumed executions of death sentences last year after winning a legal battle. While many U.S. states carry the death penalty, there have been no more federal executions since 2003. According to media reports, the government has since executed ten criminals.

A spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Wednesday that they deeply regret the execution. The EU was strongly against the death penalty in all circumstances. This is incompatible with human dignity and the right to life, inhuman, degrading and has no deterrent effect. At the same time, the spokesman stressed the EU’s commitment to ensuring effective criminal prosecution. He called on the US government not to enforce further death sentences at the federal level until the transfer.

Federal Human Rights Commissioner Bärbel Kofler had unsuccessfully called on the US government to abandon the execution. A US court declared Lisa Montgomery multiple mental illnesses, Kofler said. “She has been exposed to domestic and sexual violence since her early childhood.”

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the US government plans to carry out two more death sentences before victorious Trump challenger Joe Biden takes office on Jan. 20. Future President Biden – a Democrat – has spoken out for the abolition of the death penalty at the federal level. Republican Trump is a supporter of the death penalty.
