The Portuguese photojournalist is one of the best in the world for World Press Photo
The picture of Nuno André Ferreira captured during a fire in Viseu won third place in the Spot News category.
The World Press Photo Photography Awards announced this Thursday April 15th came as a good surprise to Portugal. Is it that Lusa Agency photojournalist Nuno André Ferreira received an important award thanks to a photo taken last year during one of the many forest fires that devastated Portugal? The photojournalist’s picture won third prize in the Spot News category for local news.
In total, the organization honored 45 winners with origins in 28 countries. The picture by Nuno André Ferreira shows the violent fire in Oliveira de Frades, Viceu that appears in the background. In the foreground a child who was housed in a car and was barely noticeable in view of the Dantesque landscape behind him.
This is not the photojournalist’s first distinction. In 2019 he won the King of Spain Prize for Journalism, thanks to the already famous image of the President comforting one of the victims of the fires after losing his home in the flames.

The main prize for Photography of the Year was given to the Danish photographer Mads Nissen. The winning picture shows an 85-year-old Brazilian woman who is being hugged for the first time in five months due to precautionary measures in the pandemic. The hug is done through a plastic protector, which is important to stop the infection of Covid-19.
