Armin Laschet is the new head of the CDU. But will he also be the Union’s candidate for chancellor? According to a poll, the odds for the head of the sister party should have increased.
Augsburg (dpa / lby) – After Armin Laschet’s election as new CDU president, every second German believes CSU boss Markus Söder’s chances of becoming chancellor of the Union have improved.
That said 48.5 percent of the respondents, according to a representative online survey by opinion research institute Civey on behalf of the Augsburger Allgemeine.
18.4 percent assume the opposite: that Söder now has worse chances. The other respondents think that Laschet’s choice does not influence Söder’s chances, or do not express an opinion. The polls questioned 5,052 people across Germany on the weekend after the CDU party conference.
