Protection of the Constitution: Corona criticism no reason for observation | Free press

Parts of the Corona protest movement are being observed nationwide with the help of intelligence services. According to Thomas Haldenwang, president of the Federal Constitutional Protection Office, the main issue is “attacks on democracy”.

Berlin (dpa) – The nationwide observation of parts of the so-called nonconformist movement is, according to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, a result of the radicalization of activists from this scene.

“The pandemic has triggered new, serious developments – as we can see from the protests against the federal government’s corona-protection measures,” said Thomas Haldenwang, chairman of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, of the German news agency.

As an early warning system, the federal office has been closely monitoring this development and “noted an increasing radicalization of some actors”. The relevance for the protection of the Constitution has intensified to such an extent that observation became necessary. However, Haldenwang stressed that “our interest here is not about protesters’ critical attitude towards government measures, but about attacks on our democracy.” Through the use of intelligence sources, the relevant actors and parts of the movement can now be trained – “this also applies to financial aspects”.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior announced yesterday that the Bureau for the Protection of the Constitution is observing individual actors and sections of the Corona protest movement nationwide with the help of intelligence agencies. The reason for this is the “de-legitimation of the state relevant to the constitutional protection” they pursue.
