Police raided an event of Russian opposition activists in Moscow. Several people are arrested.
Moscow (AP) – Russian security forces broke up an opposition rally during a raid on the capital Moscow and arrested several people.
Numerous participants in the forum were held in prison transporters, a reporter from the German news agency reported from the meeting place. Opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Mursa and activist Alexei Piwowarov, among others, were taken away.
Dozens of people, including journalists who wanted to report on the event, were temporarily detained in the building, a hotel. At first it was unclear why the police stopped the event.
The Russian opposition has repeatedly complained of serious violations by the security authorities of the right to freedom of assembly. In the past, attempts by dissidents to rally and organize have failed time and again.
Several prominent opposition members would appear on the forum of the so-called “United Democrats”, including local politician Ilya Yashin in Moscow. A new parliament will be elected in Russia this autumn. In the elections, the Kremlin United Russia party wants to defend its two-thirds majority.
