An operational amplifier is a DC -coupled high-voltage audio amplifier with a single-ended active output and, generally, a balanced input signal. In this design, an op amp generates an output voltage that is normally at least 100,000 times stronger than the input signal. The operation of such an amplifier starts by connecting the positive and negative leads of the AC source to the + and – rails on the OPAQ. OPAQs have their input signals OPAQ-1 and -2. If any of these signals become high frequency active current sources, then the OPAQ is biased “on”.

When a high frequency input pulse is provided by a VCA, then this pulse can be amplified by the OPAQ. This amplified current will then flow through the op-amp’s gate and will reach the audio input signal when it is triggered. This op-amp will then convert the high frequency input signal to lower frequency active currents which will in turn go through the additional buffer made by the capacitor. The capacitor will then act as a limiting resistive element to limit the levels of these currents. This is all that is needed to obtain what we know as an OPAQ circuit. It is also quite possible for such a circuit to implement a phase transition in its operation thus achieving what is known as “Operational Amplification”.

The Figure 1 circuit is used almost exclusively in modern audio amplifiers where a high level of distortion is desired. The operation is achieved by feeding a very low current into the OPAQ and then feeding a high current into the capacitor bank. The result is that the high current from the amplifier drives the capacitor to such a high value that current generated by the amplifier drives the capacitor to ground. The circuit is then closed after being ground for some time. Such a design is used in many modern op amps for the purpose of achieving the desired level of distortion-free output along with a high level of efficiency. In addition, the operation is highly linear due to the low level of backfeed which keeps the mixer currents from backfeeding into the audio input signal.
