More than 45 million vaccine doses administered in Germany | Free press

Berlin (dpa) – More than 45 million doses have been administered in Germany since the start of the corona vaccination campaign. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) (as of 10:05 a.m.) 287,574 people were immunized on Monday, of which 158,451 have now received their full vaccination protection.

The holiday had significantly reduced the number of vaccinations compared to the previous week, seven days earlier, to 543,637, with many more vaccinations being administered.

Overall, according to information, 40.4 percent (33.6 million) of the population has been vaccinated at least once and 14.3 percent (11.9 million) has been fully vaccinated so far.

Vaccination coverage varies depending on the federal state. The Saarland has the highest rate of at least first vaccinations at 44.2 percent. Saxony, at 35.3 percent, is slightly behind the other federal states. But while Saarland is also at the top when it comes to considering second vaccinations, the campaign in Brandenburg is progressing the slowest, according to the RKI.

The vaccination campaign in Germany started at the end of last year. First it was the turn of people over 80, residents of old people’s and nursing homes and medical staff. Chronically ill people with an increased risk of a serious and fatal course are preferred to vaccinate. As of June 7, the priority for vaccination will be lifted throughout Germany, in some states even a little earlier.

Vaccination numbers in the European Union

In Europe, 170 million Europeans must be vaccinated against Corona at least once this Sunday. That’s 46 percent of the adult population in the European Union, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, according to information from EU circles at the Brussels summit. By May 30, approximately 300 million doses of corona vaccine were reported to have been delivered in the EU, of which 245 million had been administered.

Deliveries in the second quarter from April to June therefore exceed original expectations: 413 million vaccine doses from manufacturers Biontech / Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca and Johnson & Johnson are expected to arrive in the EU. At the beginning of March, von der Leyen had talked about 300 million cans in the second quarter. According to the current forecast, there should be 529 million cans in the third quarter from July to the end of September, and another 452 million in the fourth quarter.

Von der Leyen has set a goal to vaccinate at least 70 percent of adults in the EU against Covid-19. She considers this feasible in July, at least for the first vaccination.

EU heads of state or government discussed the situation in the fight against the pandemic on the second day of their summit. The summit’s draft statement says that, given vaccination successes, gradual openings would now be possible again. Nevertheless, vigilance is required because of the virus variants.
