Military: more than 200 missiles fired at Israel | Free press

Gaza / Tel Aviv (dpa) – According to the Israeli military, militant Palestinians have so far fired more than 200 missiles from the Gaza Strip at Israel.

The success rate of the iron-domed interception system is more than 90 percent, an army spokesman said Tuesday morning. About a third of all missiles fired still fell in the Gaza Strip. This is an extraordinary amount and probably victims there too.

The “Iron Dome”, a mobile defense system developed by Israel, is designed to protect the country from short-range missiles. A radar device detects approaching projectiles and sends the information to a missile launcher. He launches an interceptor missile to destroy the enemy projectile in the air, if possible before impact.

Warning sirens sounded at night, especially on the periphery of the Gaza Strip and in Ashkelon. According to a television report, two residential buildings in the city were hit. Rescue workers say six people were injured. Hamas’s military wing Al-Qassam brigades said the Ashkelon shelling was in response to the Israeli army attack on a residential building in western Gaza. If the army continues, Ashkelon will be turned into hell. Public shelters have also been made available in more distant cities such as Tel Aviv.

The Israeli army responded with air strikes to the ongoing rocket fire. According to a spokesman, the military has so far carried out about 130 attacks on targets in the Gaza Strip with fighter planes and drones. Missile production facilities, storage and training facilities and military positions were fired upon. In addition, two tunnels were attacked. Eyewitnesses reported loud explosions.

According to the military spokesman, 15 members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been killed as of today. The Gaza Health Ministry said the number of deaths was at least 22. According to previous information from the ministry, nine children were among the dead. The spokesman for the Israeli army said this report was public. He will be monitored.

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians has escalated dangerously in recent days. There were serious clashes on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Palestinian rescue workers said hundreds were injured. Nearly two dozen officers were injured, according to police.

Palestinian militants in Gaza began firing rockets at Israel early Monday evening. A Hamas spokesman said this was a “message” to enemy Israel and a “response to its crimes and aggression against the holy city.” The Islamic Jihad group also claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened a harsh response. “The terrorist organizations in Gaza crossed the red line on Jerusalem Day and attacked us with rockets in the outskirts of Jerusalem,” Netanyahu said in a speech in the city. “We will not tolerate attacks on our territory, our capital, our citizens and soldiers. Anyone who attacks us will pay a heavy price. He was preparing Israeli civilians for a longer conflict.

The EU and the US condemned the rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate end to violence in the isolated coastal area and in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. “Even if all parties (must) take measures to de-escalate, Israel naturally has the right to protect its people and territory from these attacks,” stressed US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem with the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque is of extraordinary importance to Jews and Muslims alike. It is the third holiest site in Islam. At the same time, there were two Jewish temples, the last of which was destroyed by the Romans in 70. The Western Wall is a remnant of that destroyed temple and the holiest site for the Jews.

Tensions in the West Bank and in the Arab East of Jerusalem had intensified since the beginning of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Many Palestinians are angry that police have cordoned off parts of the old city to prevent rallies. In addition, some Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah district are threatened with deportation by the Israeli authorities. There have been night clashes in Jerusalem since Friday. Confrontations also broke out in many Arab cities in Israel and in parts of the West Bank.

Since Hamas forcibly seized power in the Gaza Strip in 2007, Israel and the radical Palestinian organization have fought three wars. Israel and Egypt are blockading the area and justify this with security considerations. About two million people live there in appalling conditions. In August 2020, Hamas announced a ceasefire with Israel after mediation from Qatar. But even after that there were always violations. Hamas has been classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the US and the EU. She has made the destruction of Israel her goal.
