Berlin (dpa) – Despite criticism from Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), the majority of states want to allow hotel stays for family visits during the holidays.
After Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony now also want to allow such overnight stays during the Christmas period. According to information from the German news agency, Merkel on Monday criticized participants in a rotating conference of the CDU presidency, particularly the plans of countries affected by the corona pandemic to allow hotel stays for family visits during Christmas in major cities.
At the meeting on the decision of the federal and state governments last Wednesday, Merkel admitted to relaxing strict corona contact restrictions during the holidays, participants further reported. But she also said she didn’t have the imagination to suspect that especially affected countries wanted to open hotels.
Merkel justified her criticism that it was not possible to verify that only guests were staying at the hotels who actually visited family members. According to this information, the Chancellor was referring to the corresponding regulations in large cities such as Berlin. It cannot be explained that the nurses at the Berlin Charité also have to work until Christmas. Several participants reported that she did not speak explicitly about Schleswig-Holstein or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Declining incidence values can be seen in some territorial states.
The Chancellor spoke of positive developments in the numbers of corona infections in Hamburg and Bremen. In contrast, there are more and more numbers in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. Regional measures should now be taken. Regional efforts are needed. CDU boss Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer emphasized, according to participants in the presidium meeting that unfortunately there is still a “sideways movement” in the number of infections.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, Saxony is the national leader in new infections within a week per 100,000 inhabitants with 242, ahead of Berlin with 199. In Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the incidence of seven days is 46 and 47 respectively (From November 30, 00.00). hour)
Government spokesman Steffen Seibert stressed that the Bund-Länder round called on citizens to avoid tourist forays. Since such trips are difficult to distinguish from family-related trips, the federal and state governments have not included the private use of hotels during the Christmas period in the decision. As a rule, however, the resolutions would have to be implemented through government regulations – which would lead to deviations.
On Wednesday, federal and state governments agreed that the partial closure with the closure of restaurants, theaters, fitness studios and leisure facilities should be extended until December 20. Private meetings are limited to a maximum of five people. During the Christmas season, restrictions need to be relaxed to allow for family visits.
