Berlin (dpa) – The slow corona vaccinations should finally gain momentum. Many are waiting for it after the frustration of scarce vaccines and overloaded hotlines. The breakthrough should lead to increased supply volumes, the inclusion of practices and changes to the vaccination regulation.
If possible, the GPs will start at the beginning of April. Exact date still open. Because the change is not easy for the federal and state governments. An overview:
Who gives the green light for the training sessions?
This is now a top priority for Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the Prime Ministers. Government spokesman Steffen Seibert asked two questions: “When exactly should the transition to the doctor’s practice be organized and what should be observed in practice?” Merkel and the country leaders should both decide “very quickly” based on a recommendation from health ministers – even before the next upcoming Corona round on March 22.
Why are countries having a hard time making the decision?
It is difficult to clarify: how much vaccine still has to be reserved for the regional vaccination centers that have collected the federal states for the first vaccination phase? And how is it ensured that people do not receive invitations to the centers after they have been vaccinated by their GP? “Depending on when the transition occurs, it may initially be associated with small doctor’s fees,” explains Seibert.
Why was vaccination not in practice from the start?
Because the vaccine is sometimes very sensitive and was very rare at first. The agent of Biontech and Pfizer must therefore be cooled strongly. Nevertheless, according to the National Association of Statutory Health Insurers (KBV), it can also be vaccinated in practice because it can be stored for 120 hours at refrigerator temperatures. In the beginning it was mainly people over the age of 80 and employees and residents of nursing homes who were vaccinated, other groups followed. And if the vaccine is scarce, some doctors may have problems getting the right vaccination sequence for “their patients,” explains Standing Vaccination Commission Chief Thomas Mertens.
Where is Germany currently vaccinated?
According to the Ministry of Health, 12.5 million doses of vaccine had been delivered on Tuesday and nearly 8.2 million doses had been injected. Nearly 5.6 million people received at least one first vaccination dose, 2.6 million of whom already received both necessary doses. Biontech / Pfizer, Astrazeneca and Moderna products are injected. More and more federal states are now vaccinating to a greater or lesser extent teachers, educators and police officers. Mertens warned that the weakest and most threatened could initially leave empty-handed. For example, in Baden-Württemberg, where teachers could already be vaccinated, people over 70 have recently become eligible for vaccination.
How much vaccine is coming soon?
According to the ministry, Biontech / Pfizer should have 3.23 million cans from the beginning of next week to the end of March, Astrazeneca 2.54 million cans from Thursday to Easter and from Moderna 1.1 million cans by Easter. Biontech and Pfizer plan to deliver four million doses of corona vaccine to the EU over the next two weeks – Germany also has an option in part.
How big is the vaccination capacity really?
About 1.8 million cans have been injected in the past seven days – 237,000 Tuesday alone. Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had already discussed the possibility of ten million vaccinations per week at the beginning of the week. The federal government has now tempered such high expectations for the time being. Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) said on ZDF that the amounts would not get that high in April. That’s more realistic for June, Seibert said. However, the vaccination campaign is expected to get underway in April.
What should vaccination yield in practices?
Thrust – and that’s unbureaucratic. More than 70,000 practices across the republic have experience with vaccinations against other pathogens. According to the KBV, the vaccination centers can give about 550,000 vaccinations per day, which amounts to just under four million in 7 days. According to the KBV, the practices could yield about five million a week. Statutory health insurance company Andreas Gassen had pointed out that prioritization was of secondary importance to the spread of the virus – it was important that many were vaccinated.
How should vaccination work in practice?
There are established processes for this. Wholesalers are expected to deliver the vaccines to pharmacies, from where they are brought to the practices. The doctors have to make their own decisions based on the recommendations for prioritization.
Will more change?
Yes. On Monday, a new vaccination regulation of Spahn will come into effect with retroactive effect. Then the Astrazeneca vaccine, which was initially reserved for young people due to a lack of sufficient data on the elderly, can now be injected into anyone over 18 years old. In Saxony, Bavaria, Saarland and possibly other countries, anyone can get vaccinated in corona hotspots on the border, beyond all priorities, creating a sort of protection bar for vaccinated people. And for the second vaccination, a smaller amount of vaccine should be reserved.
