Increasing demand for more flexibility in vaccination | Free press

Berlin (dpa) – After the suspension of vaccinations with the substance Astrazeneca in Germany, there is now hope for the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

She is expected to make a recommendation on the safety of the vaccine on Thursday. Then the federal and state governments want to discuss the next steps at a vaccination summit. This should take place on Wednesday, but has been postponed. It could now be caught up on Friday. The Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, called the date “Extra” in an ARD Tuesday evening. A government spokesman had previously spoken of “possibly on Friday”.

In Germany, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), which is responsible for vaccine safety, advised the discontinuation of Astrazeneca vaccinations. The Ministry of Health followed on Monday. According to information from the department of Minister Jens Spahn (CDU), a total of eight cases of thrombosis (blood clots) in the cerebral veins in connection with the vaccination were reported in Germany on Tuesday evening. The number of cases is therefore statistically significantly higher than in the population without vaccination. According to the PEI, those affected were mainly women. Whether there is a causal relationship between vaccination and thrombosis is currently being investigated.

A vaccination summit should clarify how the vaccinations will proceed. CDU boss Laschet emphasized in the ARD that you have to get out of the vaccination bureaucracy and get faster. CSU Secretary General Markus Blume demanded that if Astrazeneca got the all-clear, there would be more flexibility in vaccination. If there is a group of people who are ready to have this vaccine vaccinated, they should not be slowed down, but together with the general practitioners should ensure that this vaccine reaches the population as soon as possible, Blume said in the ZDF. “Markus Lanz “broadcast.

The Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, also said in “Markus Lanz” that if there was more vaccine and the questions at Astrazeneca had been answered, vaccination would also have to be done in medical practices and the priority setting for vaccination there should be relaxed. “We stick to certain principles, but we should apply them a bit looser, more flexible and bolder.”

Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz hopes for a positive signal from the EMA to continue using Astrazeneca. Nevertheless, the available vaccine will soon be more and more, the SPD candidate chancellor said in a ZDF “special”. In June / July there could be “maybe” ten million vaccine doses per week in Germany. Then everything must be prepared and clarified, which vaccination centers, what general practitioners and what company doctors can do. That is why the vaccination summit is “very important advice”.

The SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach renewed in the ZDF ‘heute journal’ that he, unlike Spahn, would have decided not to suspend vaccination at Astrazeneca. While the complications are serious, they are very rare. However, without the suspension, several more serious cases of Covid-19 would have been prevented in the coming weeks, Lauterbach argued. He expected the EMA to recommend further vaccination of Astrazeneca. “After that, we will have to advertise the vaccine,” said Lauterbach.

Several politicians have done that. He would be vaccinated with it, Kretschmann said on ZDF. He thinks if he gets Covid, the side effects are much more serious than he could get them with the vaccination. Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) also told the “Bild” (Wednesday): “I have faith in this vaccine and would be vaccinated with it anytime!”

FDP Deputy Wolfgang Kubicki told the editorial network Germany (RND / Wednesday): “We should have continued to vaccinate with Astrazeneca without interruption.” If GPs are involved in the vaccination campaign, they have to decide which vaccine to give. The president of the German Association of General Practitioners, Ulrich Weigeldt, insisted on vaccinations in practice. Vaccination is a matter of confidence, it is crucial that “the benefits clearly outweigh the risks”. GPs could explain this to their patients better than “anonymous vaccination centers”. That is why the national vaccination start in the practices must take place as soon as possible, Weigeldt demanded in the newspapers of the Funke media group (Wednesday).

The federal chairman of the Virchow Association of Resident Doctors, Dirk Heinrich, called for changes to the vaccination strategy. “We now have to take a lot more Biontech for the younger,” Heinrich told the Tagesspiegel (Wednesday). Moreover, Astrazeneca is “the vaccine most suitable for the elderly”.

CDU health politician Peter Liese suggested more economical use of vaccines. It is possible to take seven instead of six doses from Biontech / Pfizer ampoules and eleven instead of ten doses from Moderna, the MEP told Handelsblatt (Wednesday). Liese also suggested offering antibody testing to those who want to vaccinate. These tests may indicate infection protection built by a corona infection. Those who have this protection against infection can do without early vaccination voluntarily, says Liese. This could allow others to be vaccinated earlier.
