Hildburghausen / Passau (dpa) – Due to the persistently high number of infections, further restrictions have come into effect in German corona hotspots.

After hundreds of citizens protested in Hildburghausen on Wednesday against the harsh closure with exit restrictions, a meeting ban has been in force in the Thuringian district since Sunday. In the Lower Bavarian city of Passau, people have only been allowed to leave the house for a valid reason since Saturday.

In Berlin, a major corona warning value for intensive care beds was briefly exceeded on Sunday. According to the health administration’s management report, more than a quarter of these beds in the capital were occupied by Covid 19 patients. The Corona traffic light introduced in Berlin to evaluate the pandemic situation was red for two of the three indicators, but in the late afternoon the traffic light turned yellow again. According to the updated values, 24.2 percent of intensive care beds are now occupied by Covid 19 patients.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the seven-day incidence – i.e. the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week – is about 178 in Berlin, slightly less than 539 in Passau and over 579 in the Hildburghausen district (since: November 29 , midnight). From a value of 50, a region is classified as a risk area. The health department in Hildburghausen even gave the seven-day incidence on Sunday at 588 (previous day: 595).

Health authorities across Germany reported more than 14,500 new corona infections and 158 new deaths to the RKI within 24 hours. On Sundays and Mondays, the numbers are relatively low because, according to the RKI, fewer samples are taken during the weekend and fewer tests are carried out in total. According to the RKI situation report on Saturday, the seven-day incidence across Germany was 136.

The mayor of Hildburghausen, Tilo Kummer (left), appealed to citizens on Sunday to take the ban on meetings seriously. “Otherwise, everything is for the cat,” said Kummer of the German news agency in view of calling the network for further corona protests. It is unacceptable for people to apparently see it as a game of breaking the rules. On Wednesday hundreds of people walked through the streets of the city district singing, some without masks and with minimal distance.

In Passau, the stricter rules were largely adhered to on weekends. According to their own statements, the police were on duty with several patrol teams to check this. The balance was positive on Sunday. The people followed the guidelines, a spokesman said.

In the far north of Germany, however, it looks much calmer given the current contamination numbers: In the Schleswig-Flensburg district, the corona warning value was below eleven on Sunday, according to RKI information. Nationally, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants was nowhere lower within a week. The state average in Schleswig-Holstein was also below 50. Six districts in the state were among the ten districts with the lowest national figures. Only in the Pinneberg district near Hamburg was the value more than 100.

“The number of corona deniers here is aiming for zero, which means that no one is out of step,” said SSW party leader Lars Harms of the German news agency. Minister of State Heiner Garg (FDP) sees a reason for the relatively moderate contamination rates also in the acceptance and understanding of the people for the necessity of the measures.
