Fridays for Future prepares for global climate strike | Free press

Corona has calmed the climate. However, the fact that time is of the essence in the fight against the climate crisis has not changed. Fridays for Future calls for a global climate strike.

Berlin (dpa) – The climate protection activists from Fridays for Future (FFF) are calling for a global climate strike this Friday.

Under the motto #NoMoreEmptyPromises – no more empty promises – organizers in more than 50 countries want to protest against the promotion of fossil fuels and what they see as a failed climate policy. In Germany, the most important thing is to “demand the necessary measures for a climate-friendly policy in the election year,” said FFF Germany co-organizer Carla Reemtsma, the German news agency.

According to its current status, actions are planned in about 200 cities in this country. They will be held under pandemic-related restrictions in consultation with the authorities. As the organizers point out, there will be ‘creative forms of protest’ in many places this year with hygiene concepts, such as bicycle demonstrations or chalk and art events. The activists want to move some of the global climate strike online. It was said that the exact number of participants was difficult to quantify due to the special situation this year.

Friday’s strike is already Fridays for Future’s seventh global climate strike. Since its inception in the summer of 2018, the movement has fought against the effects of climate change and for global compliance with climate goals. The movement, consisting mainly of young people, was characterized by demonstrations every Friday, which did not take place for months last year due to the corona pandemic. This year, the activists want to raise awareness about climate and environmental issues again.
