Frequency Transducers, also called FPT, have a number of applications in manufacturing and scientific laboratories. They can be used in ultrasound machines for producing ultrasonic sound waves, such as in diagnostic ultrasound machines, chest x-rays and mammography machines. In addition to their applications in the medical industry, they are also used in many consumer products. Examples of frequency sensitive products include Puffs, which are air-filled bubbles containing salt or other substances that generate ultrasound vibrations.

Many research projects utilize FPT systems for diagnostic testing, such as those done by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Science Institute. One such project is the Bioloscope project, which is a joint venture between the Pacific Science Institute and the Department of Defense. The Bioloscope project utilizes two main technologies developed by the two research teams. One uses a frequency transducer to generate sound waves that are used in diagnostic ultrasound; the other utilizes a bioluminescent detector that emits a beam of light from inside an air-tight chamber and converts the acoustic radiation force impulse into electrical signals. This technology is very similar to the latter developed by JPL.

JPL is located at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Among its many contributions to the field of frequency transducers are the invention of the ubiquitous Li Po electric shunt, the ubiquitous Li+Pd, and the creation of the world’s first electronic computer, the Li Po microprocessor.
