Flight relay, parade and the Champs-Élysées: Last year’s major military parade was canceled because of Corona. Now it could take place again – albeit with restrictions

Paris (AP) – France celebrated its national holiday again with a huge military parade. Last year the parade was canceled due to the corona virus.

Head of State Emmanuel Macron drove an open military car at the start on the Paris boulevard Champs-Élysées. The aerobatic team opened the parade and drew the colors of the French flag in the Parisian sky. About 5,000 military personnel and members of the security apparatus take part in the parade. This year, the international force «Takuba», which is active against Islamist terrorism in the Sahel region, will be especially honored.

With the celebrations, Macron wants to look ahead, recognize the efforts made in the Corona crisis and bring out joy and hope for more normality. Even if the parade takes place again this year in the traditional format, there are restrictions: spectators must wear a mask at the edge of the parade and be in possession of an inspection, vaccination or recovery certificate. There are also space limitations. The big event is accompanied by stricter corona rules, which Macron announced at the beginning of this week.

On its national holiday on July 14, France commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, which is seen as the symbolic start of the French Revolution.
