Vaccinations should not remain the only pharmaceutical agent in the fight against the corona pandemic. That is why the EU is counting on the development of new medicines.
Brussels (dpa) – In the fight against Covid-19, the European Commission wants to rapidly promote the development and approval of new medicines.
Vaccines may not be the only answer to the disease, EU health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said in Brussels on Thursday. There are four approved corona vaccines in the European Union, but only one drug, Remdesivir.
“We need to focus more on treatments so that the hospitals have to take in fewer people, the sick recover faster and reduce mortality,” said the EU Commissioner from Cyprus. She set a goal that three drugs should be developed and approved by October. Two more should be added by the end of the year.
The European Commission’s strategy aims to fund studies and clinical trials in the millions and coordinate promising projects. Money must also be released to analyze production capacities and supply chains, for example. Five promising therapies should have been identified by June.
Manufacturers of 57 potential drugs have already contacted the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Kyriakides said. Since the beginning of the year, three funds have been examined in the so-called rolling review process. Thereafter, the data is assessed before the studies are completed and before the formal application for a marketing authorization is submitted.
In addition, according to the strategy of the European Commission, the evaluation of Covid-19 drugs by the authorities should be faster. As with the vaccines, the therapies must be jointly obtained at EU level. Three sales contracts should be concluded by the end of the year.
