Discussion on the new election date in Thuringia in the corona pandemic | Free press

In Thuringia, a new state parliament should actually be elected in April. But the country is groaning under the currently most violent corona infection in the entire country. Four parties are now discussing the consequences.

Erfurt (dpa) – Given the high number of corona infections, the left, the SPD, the Greens and the CDU in Thuringia are considering postponing the scheduled date for a new election to the state parliament.

Leading politicians of the four parties will discuss possible alternatives to the previously envisaged election date of April 25 on Thursday. According to data from Wednesday, Thuringia was the country with the most new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants within a week.

For an election date in April, the state parliament should dissolve in February – in the midst of the pandemic and possibly at a stage when decisions about infection protection should be made. The parties are also concerned that a new election would require party conventions to compile lists and direct candidates determined at district association meetings – current Corona measures make such meetings extremely difficult.

Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) has been ruling with a red-red-green minority government since March 2020, dependent on votes from the opposition CDU. The left, SPD, Greens and CDU had come to an agreement to end a week-long government crisis that made it possible to hit the state budget by 2021.

This stability pact also provides for early elections before the end of April. The Greens have already indicated that they can imagine postponing state elections because of the pandemic. The SPD group also had doubts whether a new election was feasible in the light of the corona pandemic.

According to reports, two alternative dates have been discussed so far: September 26, on which the Bundestag will also be elected, and June 6, on which a new state parliament will be elected according to previous plans in Saxony-Anhalt.
