India is still facing the worst corona wave to date. Within a day, more than 320,000 new cases and more than 2,700 deaths are reported.

New Delhi (dpa) – India registered the highest number of new corona infections in the world for the sixth day in a row. According to the Ministry of Health, 323,144 new cases and 2,771 deaths with confirmed infection have been reported.

The rapid increase in the number of patients caused overload in the health system. The lack of medical oxygen and hospital beds reportedly led to deaths.

In the worst corona wave to date in the South Asian country, more than 300,000 new cases have been recorded daily since Thursday. This surpassed the previous daily record of 300,310 cases in the US, which was reached in early January. India also reported the highest daily number of deaths last week. In the second most populous country in the world with about 1.3 billion inhabitants, the total number of infections has risen to about 17.6 million and nearly 198,000 people have died so far. The unreported numbers are likely to be significantly higher.

Doctors in the most affected city of New Delhi described how critically ill patients died in the streets due to a lack of hospital beds or a lack of medical oxygen. The lack of oxygen is responsible for 14 other deaths in four states, according to media reports.

Several countries, including Germany, have pledged their support for India. A delivery of medical supplies from Britain arrived on Tuesday morning, the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced. These include 100 fans and 95 oxygen concentrators. These are widely used devices in which the oxygen is enriched from the ambient air.

A number of countries, such as Australia, have suspended flights from India. Germany and other countries have severely restricted access from the South Asian country due to the virus variant there.
