A contactless smart card is basically a smart card with its own embedded electronic circuitry that communicates with a smart terminal through infrared. It is used in conjunction with a biometric scanner or an RFID reader to access data stored in the smart card’s database. Common use examples include airline tickets, debit cards, bank cards and even passports. Though this technology was initially developed for metal identification, it has proved useful for access control and data storage. The future of contactless smart cards is bright as the technology evolves and is getting lower cost and better performance.

Currently, most contactless smart cards systems use a microprocessor that is controlled by a computer program. The card contains a magnetic field coil antenna and an embedded circuit. To work, the embedded circuit interacts with the magnetic field and transfers the data to the computer program through the infrared contact. The microprocessor then processes the data, which is then displayed on the screen. Some cards have a built-in barcode scanner, which allows users to enter a product code into the computer prior to using it.

Currently, there are some devices that have full functionality, including voice recording, security and access control and automated transactions. However, the most advanced cards have integrated RFID chips that can be scanned by an RFID reader. Once the reader’s RFID sensor identifies the chip, the device’s memory digitally encodes the data, and the reader interprets the data according to the settings chosen. The greatest advantage of using contactless smart cards is that users can swipe the card through a reader and access personal information, while minimizing fraud. The greatest disadvantage is that they cannot be carried around like a traditional plastic card.
