Many states are going their separate ways in the fight against the corona pandemic. Several now want to allow hotel stays for family visits during the holidays, even in cities with a high rate of infections. The Chancellor is not amused.
Berlin (dpa) – Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has criticized the plans of several countries particularly affected by the corona pandemic to allow hotel stays for family visits in major cities over Christmas.
In a virtual meeting of the CDU presidency on Monday, Merkel acknowledged the federal and state governments’ decision to relax strict corona contact restrictions during the festive period, participants reported Monday to the German news agency in Berlin. She said she lacked the imagination to suspect that particularly affected countries wanted to open hotels.
Merkel justified her criticism that it was not possible to verify that only guests were staying at the hotels who actually visited family members in the region. According to this information, the Chancellor was referring to the corresponding regulations in large cities such as Berlin. It cannot be explained that the nurses at the Berlin Charité also have to work until Christmas. Several participants reported that they did not explicitly speak of Schleswig-Holstein or Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in this regard. Declining incidence values can be seen in some territorial states.
The Chancellor spoke of positive developments in the numbers of corona infections in Hamburg and Bremen. In contrast, there are more and more numbers in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg. Regional measures should now be taken. Regional efforts are needed. Merkel stressed that there were as many corona infections in November as there were from March to October combined – more than 500,000. After the deliberations of the CDU presidency, Merkel wanted to meet with the corona cabinet in the morning.
CDU boss Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer emphasized, according to participants in the presidium meeting that unfortunately there is still a “sideways movement” in the number of infections.
After North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Hesse, Schleswig-Holstein and Berlin, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania announced on Saturday that it would allow hotel stays for family visits during the holidays – contrary to a recommendation from the Chancellery. On Wednesday, federal and state governments agreed that the partial closure with the closure of restaurants, theaters, fitness studios and leisure facilities should be extended until December 20. Private meetings are limited to a maximum of five people. Contact restrictions are then relaxed during Christmas to allow for family visits.
