The chairman of the Central Council of Jews in Germany speaks of “pure hatred of Jews” in the light of anti-Semitic excesses. Representatives of Muslim communities also found clear words.
Berlin (AP) – Following the riots during protests against Israel’s actions in the Gaza conflict, the chairman of the Central Council for Jews in Germany, Josef Schuster, warned of a wave of anti-Semitism.
“For days on end, gangs sow pure hatred for Jews in many German cities. They recite the worst slogans against Jews and recall the darkest times in German history, ”Schuster said on Sunday. The police must act against it consistently. “Anti-Semitism should not be spread under the guise of freedom of assembly. The Muslim associations and imams must have a moderating effect, ”said Schuster.
In recent days there have been attacks on synagogues and other anti-Semitic incidents in several German cities. Thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday to show their solidarity with the Palestinians. At the same time, there were also small solidarity gatherings for the Israeli population in many places. Several pro-Palestinian demonstrations led to incidents and isolated riots.
Politicians and representatives of religious communities strongly condemned the attacks and the anti-Jewish slogans. Representatives of Muslim communities also found clear words. The chairman of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, Aiman Mazyek, condemned the recent violence against synagogues. “Anyone who attacks synagogues and Jews under the guise of criticizing Israel has lost any right to solidarity,” he said in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung. He strongly condemned the “disgusting attacks against our fellow Jewish citizens” of the past few days.
