Erfurt (dpa) – In Erfurt, police say a 40-year-old man racially insulted, threatened, spat and brutally attacked a 17-year-old Syrian on a tram.

The perpetrator initially managed to escape unnoticed, but “the evidence obtained at the scene of the crime” allowed the man known to police to be quickly identified, police said of the incident Friday night.

Witnesses had therefore made videos of what was happening on the tram and called on the security forces for help. According to the police, the external injuries to the victim were only minor. The alleged perpetrator is therefore a white German who is still at large. The Erfurt criminal police took over the further investigation. The man is accused of bodily harm, coercion and insult. An explanation from him is not yet available.

“Such a cowardly person, strong and aggressive towards a defenseless one,” Thuringia Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) criticized the act on Twitter. “Just disgusting!” The CDU faction also condemned the racist attack in the tram “in the strongest”.

The anti-racism spokeswoman for the left-wing parliamentary group in the state parliament, Katharina König-Preuss, was shocked: violators are consistently dealt with, ”the MP demanded.

She also referred to the recently presented statistics of victim support to Ezra. According to their count, cases of legal violence in Thuringia in 2020 remained roughly at the level of previous years. The organization registered 102 right-wing, racist or anti-Semitic attacks in the past year.
