Batalha cinema returns in 2022 (and with a new life)

It will be much more than a movie theater in this return to the cultural universe.

New Year New Life. So it will be in 2022 for Cinema Batalha, a historical cultural space in the city of Porto. After years of doubt, the space at Praça da Batalha will return in February next year.

The room will be renamed Batalha Centro de Cinema and renewed in terms of structure and programming. Last October, the Court of Auditors gave the green light for its renovation in a project with a budget of 3.95 million euros.

The new version of Cinema Batalha “does not intend to exclusively program the historical cinema or to dedicate itself to the premieres of films that enter the commercial cycle,” explained the new artistic director Guilherme Blanc in statements quoted by the press. The space would like to “propose a program that stimulates knowledge and cultural enjoyment through the diverse possibilities of making and thinking about cinema”.

This cultural symbol of the city will have the mission of being an institution that is “open, participatory, stimulating and also entertaining,” said the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, quoted on the municipality’s website.

The future Batalha Centro e Cinema will have cinema at its center, but visual art, music and research. In addition to a library and media library, the bet also includes annual continuity programs, hosting, partnerships and special sessions.

The room, founded in 1947, functioned as a cinema until the beginning of the 21st century. It then closed between 2000 and 2006 when it reopened as a cultural space under the responsibility of the Porto Merchants Association (ACP), an administration that lasted until 2010. Classified as a monument of public interest, it was in the hands of the Porto City Council since 2017. In February next year it will again be a cultural reference space in the city.
