Banksy’s Tribute to Healthcare Professionals has sold for nearly 20 million
It’s called “Game Changer” and is the artist’s most expensive work of all.
It’s called “Game Changer” and the changes it brings aren’t just due to the title of the work. Last May, in the midst of a pandemic, Banksy donated the painting to a hospital in Southampton. The work has now been sold at Christie’s London auction for £ 16.7 million, a record high for the artist’s works.
The work pays homage to health professionals that shows us a boy playing as a nurse doll wearing a superhero cloak, leaving Batman and Spider-Man toys aside.
The painting was exhibited at Southampton University Hospital itself with a single note from the artist, whose identity remains a mystery: “Thank you for everything you do. Expect this to add some color to the place, even if it’s black and white, ”CNN quotes.
A replica of Game Changer is now on display in the same hospital where the original painting used to be. The money from the painting, which was sold for a value four times the auctioneer’s expectations, will benefit not only this hospital but other UK social institutions as well
Game Changer surpassed the € 11 million record set by another Banksy painting. The recording belonged to “Parliament Devolved,” which represents the House of Commons occupied by chimpanzees.
