Aid for Africa – start of international summit in Paris | Free press

In Africa, the corona pandemic did not hit as hard as feared. But the financial consequences are a disaster. French President Macron convenes a summit.

Paris (dpa) – A major summit has started in Paris to provide financial support to African countries in the Corona crisis.

At the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, numerous heads of state and government and leaders of international organizations gathered on Tuesday in the Grand Palais Ephémère, a temporary exhibition space near the Eiffel Tower. Some participated via video connection. At the European level, for example, the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the President of the EU Council Charles Michel are among the participants.

“We need to return to the strong development Africa experienced before Covid,” said Kristalina Georgieva, head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). For the IMF, this also means taking extraordinary measures. Africa was hit “very hard” by the pandemic – especially with regard to the economy, said President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi. Now it is time to revive the economy. This requires investments in infrastructure, for example.
