After sanctions against China: EU Head of Delegation appointed | Free press

For a long time, the EU had only responded with calls to the oppression of the Uyghurs in China. But now there are concrete punitive measures. The Beijing government responded promptly.

Beijing (AP) – Following EU sanctions against Chinese people responsible for the repression of the Muslim Uyghur minority, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs convened the EU head of delegation in Beijing.

As the ministry announced, the Chinese protest had been sent to Nicolas Chapuis the day before. During the conversation, Deputy Foreign Minister Qin Gang pointed out that the punitive measures are based on “lies and false information”.

The sanctions are against reality and common sense, Qin Gang said. The European Union is not qualified to act as a human rights teacher. China urges the EU to recognize the seriousness of this error, correct it and end the confrontation “so as not to harm Sino-European relations anymore,” he said.

For the first time in more than three decades, the EU on Monday imposed sanctions on China for human rights violations. They target those responsible for the persecution of Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region of northwest China. In response, the Beijing government immediately announced counter-sanctions against European politicians, experts and institutions.

In Germany, these are the Green MEP and China expert Reinhard Bütikofer, the CDU MEP Michael Gahler as well as the Uyghur researcher Adrian Zenz and the renowned Mercator Institute for China Studies (Merics).
